Johnathans Bistro Closed
I had heard that Jonhathan’s Bistro in Appleton had closed. My wife and I took a drive over there this past weekend and found this sign on the door confirming the rumor.

The Red & White is a Wine bar located on
Atmosphere: The Red & White is part of a small strip mall. An attractive brick building with a large Red & White sign above the front door, you cant miss it. Along side the bar is nice outside seating where you will occasionally find live music playing.
Walking through the front doors you enter the main bar room. The room is split into two sections, the left side boasts rows of wine and a small section of fine spirits available for purchase. They claim to have over 1700 labels to choose from and over 7500 bottles of wine on the floor. The right side of the room has some pub style seating, a large size bar area and dark wood floors to boot.
The tables were very appealing in the dimly lit room. A single light hanging over the table provided just enough brightness to lite the cork filled glass top tables. I wish I could have taken some better pictures of the area but the lighting was not adequate.
In addition to the bar area, a second seating room is available towards the back of the facility. Some of the decor includes a plasma television as well as various wine racks stocked with bottles of wine.
Food: Since this is a wine bar there is not too much to discuss. There is a great selection of wine available by the glass or bottle. If your not into wine they also have imported beers and domestic micro brews. The last time we visited Red & White, some great live music was being played on the patio for customers to enjoy. It was rather busy during our visit, but we were lucky enough to score a great pub style table to accommodate our group of 6. Since this was a first time visit for our friends they decided on a few different wine flights and my wife and I decided to try something new, a cheese flight. Our friends thought the wine flights were average but all raved about the cheese flight.
In the cheese flight we had asiago, parmesan and bella. They were delivered on a attractive black slate plate with green and black olives. There was plenty of cheese here for our entire party and it was excellent. The only down side to the night was our service, since we have been here in the past with good service we are going to chalk this one up to a busy night. We waited way to long for drinks as well as our cheese. Then when it was time to leave our bill was completely screwed up.
Conclusion: Even if your not a wine connoisseur there is plenty to love at the Red & White. I would tell you its definitely worth a stop, even thought one of our friends made a comment that the Red & White maybe trying a bit too hard. They thought it has a decent interior, but that being in a strip mall while trying to cater to a certain customer may be limiting. Looks like you will have to stop in and decide for yourself.

Welcome back to tasteofthefoxvalley.com. This week my wife and I revisited what is becoming one of our favorite new locations, Bogarts Fine Spirits & Cigars. Bogarts is a fairly new bar located downtown Neenah in the Marketplace. We visited Bogarts previously and each time we go back we seem to enjoy it more and more. For us this is the perfect after dinner place to sit, relax and enjoy what they have to offer.
Atmosphere: Bogarts has the ambiance that we are looking for when we are out with just each other or meeting friends. As you enter you are instantly impressed by the beautiful old fashioned sign hanging above the door. The windows located on both sides of the entrance showcase the fine Wilmer’s Chocolates, beautiful bottles of scotch, wine and other spirits they offer. You can view these photos below to get an idea of the atmosphere of Bogarts.

As you walk into the establishment, you enter the main seating area. Bogarts is dimly lit, with gold painted walls and a light wood floor which maintain that rich elegance that greeted you at the front door. There area few seats at the bar but mostly small pub style tables.
If you would like a little more privacy there is a small lounge just off the main area with seating for 5. As I was sipping on my scotch, I admired the nice details surrounding me. Some old cigar boxes, a cognac book, a bottle of wine, and nostalgic pictures on the wall from Casablanca. I particularly enjoyed the music of Frank Sinatra playing in the background.
The bar is beautiful, if only the pictures could do it justice. I tried explaining to my wife that we need to redo our basement to look like this, but she gave me a quick eye roll and we moved on. Behind the bar is a display of whiskeys, scotches, cognac and other spirits they offer as well as available beers. Next to the bar is a nice sized display humidor showing off a very thorough selection of cigars. Its is a shame that Bogarts is smoke free because I could have easily been swayed to light up a VSG or a MX2. The cigar prices were very fair so it never hurts to pick up one more for your humidor.
Spirits: I could not find a menu on Bogart’s website but did take this this quote from the web page. We specialize in serving a unique selection of wine, cognac, champagne, imported beer, single malt scotch whiskey, artisan cheese, chocolate truffles and premium cigars. While we were there I had a glass of 12 year old Aberlour scotch and my wife had few pieces of Chocolate Truffle. The chocolates they offer come from Wilmar chocolates in Appleton.
Conclusion: Bogarts is definitely a must try. With a collection of some of the best spirits, a rich atmosphere and friendly service you won’t be disappointed.
