HuHot Mongolian Grill

March 24th, 2009

About: HuHot is a mongolian grill chain of restaurants across the United States. It opened its first store in Missoula, MT in 1999. It was a short time later in 2002 that the first franchisee opened a store in Omaha, NE. You can see all the current locations from this link. My wife and I love to visit the location closest to us on West College Avenue in Appleton, WI.  Below you will find a Google map of this location.

Atmosphere: When you enter  HuHot you are greeted immediately by a host that will seat you and begin preparing you for your HuHot experience.   The menu consists only of appetizers, drinks and desserts (not that those are a bad thing!)  The atmosphere is comfortable and the aroma of the grill is incredible!  There are booths, tables and a full service bar.

Food: When you are ready to eat you walk through a buffet line that consists of three sections. Before you make your way through the line I suggest you pick up two bowls to fill, although there is a sign that says one bowl per trip  : )  If you go with two bowls right away, you will only need to go through the line one time.    The first section is my personal favorite, the meat! Here you can choose from chicken, pork, beef and some basic seafood followed by a few noodle selections.

The second section of the buffet line is a nice selection of vegetables, followed by the third section which is a large selection of sauces like curry, ginger, bean and teriyaki just to name a few. Here you can mix and match ladels to your liking, or you can follow one of the recipe recommendations on the board from mild to hot.

Once you have finished trying to cram all this food into a bowl (or two in my case) you bring everything up to the grill and it is cooked  in front of you. There are usually 4 to 5 cooks around the grill and a line of customers circling around the grill bar style watching there creations during preparation.  The food cooks up quickly and is transferred to a clean plate and you are ready to make your way back to your table.  If you are interested, there are a few condiments available such as spicy chili sauce, sesame seeds, asian noodles or even coconut flakes to add to the top.

Conclusion: If you have never visited a HuHot location we highly recommend it. Not only is it a new and fun experience compared to a traditional restaurant but it has also been delicious each time we have visited.

Chuck E. Cheese

March 16th, 2009

About: Chuck E Cheese is a chain pizza restaurant that puts kids first. Chuck E. Cheese’s consists of over 500 entertainment centers in 48 states and 5 countries. You can find all there current locations from their website here.

Parents…..if you are looking for a pizzeria where a kid can be a kid, Chuck E Cheese is the place for you.  We have been taking our kids to Chuck E Cheese for a few years.  This March, we decided to celebrate our daughter’s 2 year old birthday with Chuck E and were quite impressed.

Atmosphere: Games, slides, pizza, soda, chaos and beer are just a few of the items you will find at Chuck E Cheese.  The main dining area contains both booth and table seating.  This area is utilized mostly for birthday parties and for the kids to dance on “tv” and watch the Chuck E Cheese show.  There is  a separate game area with many video games for kids of all ages.  We have seen kids as young  as 2 on the games up to teenagers and adults on the more difficult gaming machines.  Younger children are just as content to climb the slides and tunnel system which costs nothing. One of the great elements of this restaurant is that they check each adult and child in together and the children can only leave with the adult they checked in with.  This increases parents level of security.

Food: Pizza is the main focus of Chuck E Cheese.  They offer a large salad bar as well as some typical “bar” favorites such as buffalo wings and other appetizers.  Kids can have pizza or choose to order off the kids menu.

Conclusion: The kids LOVE Chuck E Cheese.  It can be hectic, but seeing the smiles on the little people’s faces, makes it worthwhile.  Bring you wallet as each game costs 25 cents. Go to the website to look for money saving coupons.  Chuck E Cheese is a great place to celebrate your kids birthday.  They have a special showing of Chuck E Cheese and the kids follow him around the restaurant in a parade fashion. Overall good experience, restrooms could be cleaner. Below you will find a few pictures from out last visit as well as information on how to contact Chuck E Cheese.

Cannova’s Pizzeria

March 4th, 2009

About:
This is our first review  and  am  happy to report  say that it is on one of our favorites,  Cannova’s Pizzeria.  Cannova’s  is located downtown Neenah and is owned by Kyle and Debbie Rasmus. You can find contact information you might need below our review.

Atmosphere:
As you walk into Cannova’s you are greeted with a very comfortable atmosphere. It is decorated in warm colors, nicely lit, and accompanied by a beautiful wood bar backed by a large brick wall and exposed ductwork above.  In the back of the restaurant is a slightly open kitchen where diners can get a glimpse of the pizza making.  If you end up at a table near there it is entertaining to watch the chef’s work their craft. If you are seated at the front of the restaurant you may get lucky enough to get a table by the window or get a seat close to the live music they offer, often a 2 man band playing the bass and piano. During the summer months there is a patio out back where you can dine.
Casual wear is appropriate.

The Food:
Cannova’s Pizzeria prides themselves as a pizzeria with fine Italian dining. I have to agree the  pizza is truly a  unique experience.  The specialty pizza’s offered are not the regular pizzas that most are familiar with.  The pizza’s have little to no sauce, instead the pizzas are covered with chucks of sweetened tomatoes like you would find on bruschetta. This to me is a very refreshing change from the norm. I have not tried all there pizza’s but my personal favorite is the “Sicilian”, here is a direct quote from there menu. Olive oil, mozzarella, sliced italian sausage, pepperoncinis, and tomatoes. Winner of Best Traditional Pizza, “Pizza Today” 2001, Chicago.

Other then pizza Cannovas also has a limited menu of items such as Lasagna, tenderloin, veal and a few seafood dishes. My personal favorite is the shrimp Alfredo, my wife’s being the cheese tortolini with tomato basil cream sauce.
There is a full bar including a nice martini and wine list.

Conclusion:
Like stated at the beginning of the review, Cannova’s is one of those great restaurants with the right price, the right atmosphere and great food. If you have not given it a try yet we would highly recommend it. As I am finishing this review I wish I would have taken some pictures to give you a little better look into what the atmosphere as well as the entree’s look like. I will make sure to grab some snapshots for future reviews.
